World Seido Karate Organisation

United Kingdom
Branch chief: Roger Thyer-Jones (Jun Shihan, 6th dan)

Seido is a traditional style of karate, formed on 15th October 1976 by Tadashi Nakamura. Since then Seido has grown substantially, with clubs in many countries, including seven in the United Kingdom. UK headquarters are in High Wycombe and are lead by Roger Thyer-Jones (Jun Shihan, 6th dan).

Seido karate stresses above all the philosophy that karate should teach 'Technique before Strength, Spirit before Technique'. If you train with us, you will undoubtedly become stronger and develop sound karate technique, but most of all, Seido aims to build students with a strong spirit and attitude towards karate, and life. This 'non-quitting' spirit is a modern interpretation of the bushido (martial way) of the Japanese samurai.

Seido provides a structured environment for learning karate. The discipline and etiquette of a Japanese-based martial art creates a serious and respectful atmosphere in the dojo, and yet there is a genuine friendliness between students. If you feel you would like to visit us, please come and join in and give it a go - or simply watch a class. We look forward to having you along!

Seido Karate Schools Development Programme

"We have been running a variety of programmes which combine practical self protection skills ( e.g. awareness, avoidance and escape) with Karate bases exercises and drills, which help develop students self confidence as well as physical attributes such as cardiovascular fitness, co- ordination and flexibility.

So far we have worked with independent schools such as Godstowe, St. Pirans, Thorpe House and The Beacon as part of their Post Common Entrance Exam and Leadership programmes, where we have delivered courses ranging from 3 hours to 10 weekly sessions. We have also presented lectures at such establishments as Eton College, and have run programmes at schools such as The Royal Grammar School, Sir William Borlases Grammar School and John Hampden Grammar School.

We sought and gained permission from Bucks County Council to teach in their schools, and are now a recommended activity for 17 schools in South Bucks starting in September 2007. We are also already taking bookings with a number of independent schools into 2008.

Roger Thyer- Jones, and Stuart Wilson have completed enhanced CRB checks for the purposes of Bucks County, and have also undertaken "first aid in schools" training. We also actively support the Child Protection Policy as laid out by the Martial Arts Development Commission."
